CHRISTIANE WITTIG

Christiane Wittig

Development background

Throughout my work I have attempted to integrate digital media into objects both created and found. This process of integration fuses the object with a metaphorical meaning manifest in myriad aspects of the artwork. I seek to create meaning, to provoke, to evoke feeling and emotion in the participant by establishing a dialogue which operates in terms of both the object and the (object in the) space. Precisely this type of process is at work in some of my earlier exhibitions in which themes of fragility and ephemerality were explored in the interaction between object, space and participant. The fusion of various types of media with plexiglass (perspex), a material common to all my work, enables me to examine the larger dynamic at play in notions of fragility and ephemerality. The use of a transparent, malleable, lightweight, (fragile?) material in what are often large, dominant spaces demands consideration and interaction in a way that is not reductionist or passive – as in so many works of media art.
