Inside CD John Niland
John Niland Vinyl Recording, released 1985 Funded by QEII Arts Council Grant Nominated and Finalist for a Jazz Record Award All Compositions written John Niland Features Ross Burge - Drums and Rob Mahoney - Double Bass Now Reissued July 2007 Available from http://www.eelmanrecords.com

All material featured on "INSIDE" original music. The material was in part inspired by the early MUZAK systems and by solo piano artists of the 80's. Other influences are Blues, Funk, R & B, Rock & Roll pianists.

Compositions for solo piano developed out of early attempts at composition. During this period an interest in recording began at Broadcasting House Wellington with Tony Swartz and continued with Nigel Stone at Marmalade Audio Studio, Wellington.

To Triumph, Birth Of A Fantail, Captured, It's Nice To Be Home evolved out of Wellington, New Zealand largely inspired by visits to Makara Beach, Blackbridge Road rehearsal room and chilling out at '142'.

Inside, Blue 4 Henk, 10 A.M. and Sense Of Duty along with the epic "From The Boatshed", evolved in Nelson, New Zealand during 1983 - 84, while studying music and art.

"INSIDE" was developed with the assistance of a Queen Elizabeth II Arts Grant. Thanks to Brendon Smyth, James Moss, Wendy Calder for their support, in the development and promotion of the vinyl record in that period. Further thanks to encouragement from Jayrem, "INSIDE" was nominated and featured as a finalist in the Category,   "Jazz Record of The Year" 1986, New Zealand Music Awards.

Piano teachers and mentors Bill Hoffmeister and Bob Barcham were early influences in the development the musical odyssey. Another important teacher was Len Doran, jazz guitar. Thanks also to Ruth and Joe Niland for their enthusiastic support and encouragement for this project. Thank you for buying the Kemble piano and the piano lessons at the Brigidine Convent Johnsonville in the early years.

Art work for 'INSIDE" used found collaged elements of typography, images from newspaper. This marked the beginning of an art practice that has continued into a Diploma Art (Ceramics) 1989 and B Design (Hons) 1999.
